Dr Gowreeson Thevendran

Profile

Dr Gowreeson Thevendran is an orthopaedic surgeon practising at Island Orthopaedics (Mount Elizabeth Hospitals and Mount Alvernia Hospital). His subspecialty interests are foot and ankle surgery, trauma/fracture surgery and the treatment of lower extremity sports injuries. He is particularly skilled in minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery.

In addition to treating foot and ankle conditions, Dr Gowreeson treats ligament and cartilage injuries of the knee. He is also skilled in joint replacement surgery of the hip, knee and ankle, and performs minimally invasive fracture surgery.

He studied medicine at the University of Bristol, England on a full scholarship by the Public Services Department. He underwent basic surgical training at the Royal Free Hospital, London, UK, and specialty training in orthopaedic surgery in the North West Thames. Thereafter, he pursued subspecialty fellowship training, spending 1 year at the University of British Columbia, Canada in foot and ankle surgery, 6 months at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital London in sports surgery and 6 months at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in complex trauma and deformity correction surgery.

Prior to establishing his private practice, Dr. Gowreeson was Chief of Foot & Ankle Surgery in the orthopaedics department at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). During his tenure at TTSH, he was also the associate programme director of the NHG Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Programme and the orthopaedic lead and assistant professor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. He continues to serve the orthopaedics department at TTSH as a visiting consultant.

Dr Gowreeson is committed to the development of foot and ankle surgery in Singapore. He was the chairman of the Singapore Foot & Ankle Arthroscopy Course and the Singapore Foot & Ankle Expert Panel Symposium in 2014 and 2015. He is also a founding member of the Singapore Foot & Ankle Society.

Teaching is a passion of Dr Gowreeson. He continues to participate as an international faculty member at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) orthopaedics course, the Cambridge FRCS basic science course and the AO Foundation course. He is an external lecturer at the School of Biological Sciences at Nanyang Technological University and an examiner for the Master of Medicine (orthopaedics) exit exams at National University of Singapore.

Research-wise, Dr Gowreeson has a keen interest in cartilage regeneration and bioreabsorbable implants. He pioneered the use of Magnezix bioreabsorbable screws in Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region and is a principal investigator in a multicentre trial evaluating these implants. He has authored over 25 scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals and was an invited speaker at more than 50 regional and international orthopaedic meetings.
